CURRENT SERIES: Behind the Curtain, 1 Timothy

Dorothy (from the Wizard of Oz) thought that the Wizard would be a mighty man; instead she found out that the man behind the curtain was simply an ordinary person.

The same can sometimes be said of the church. People expect a dynamic pastor, extremely skilled staff, and dynamic elders. And they are almost always disappointed when they find out that the local church is simply a family of faith (not a high powered organizational operation); God's household entrusted with God's message for the world.

1 Timothy is a letter from a missionary, Paul, to a young pastor at a struggling church in Ephesus that had some dysfunction.

Paul urges Timothy (and the church) to lead the church at Ephesus, to pray fervently, serve diligently, and care sacrificially for one another.

He warns against dangerous threats to the church, from deceptive teachings in Chapter 1 all the way to destructive materialism in Chapter 6. In it all, this letter shows how the local church is to be as a family of faith, with a shared mission focused on the good news of Jesus..
